‘F111 case study workshop’

The General Dynamics (GD) F-111 is unarguably the most controversial fighter-attack aircraft ever developed. It suffered from a nearly impossible multi-role/multi-service requirement specification, and a protracted development cycle in which numerous serious technical problems had to be identified and corrected.

The State of Play in Railway Systems Engineering

A dozen or so RIG members attended the INCOSE International Symposium held in Utrecht in June 2008. There was a significant rail presence at the event with senior participation from Network Rail, London Underground, New York City Transit and Pro Rail and we all left convinced that rail SE is in the midst of a significant period of development, in some countries at least.

“Dealing with technology – is there a roadmap to success?”

Technology issues are often found at the heart of systems engineering projects. This event features guest speakers with experience of dealing with technology management and insertion issues on in-service, current development and future programmes from Rolls Royce, Sula Systems and Thales. The event will be in a workshop format with attendees invited to bring along their own experience and opinions, debate the issues and draw collective conclusions as to the best approaches and strategies to take to the management of this frequently tricky area.

Programme management in a systems engineering environment (in association with the APM)

Systems Engineering and Project or Programme Management need to be linked effectively to promote the prospects of success in complex systems development. It is the objective of this evening to explore the interfaces between the disciplines with a view to improving understanding of the differing viewpoints and the opportunities to improve practice. With speakers from both professional bodies it is a topic that we would expect to see stimulate a lively debate. To ensure that discussions stay grounded in reality, we also have an end-user representative with years of experience of waiting for capabilities to actually be delivered!

Interoperability, speed, increased safety, capacity, reliability and efficiency are the cornerstones of UK and European rail industry plans to remain competitive against road transport and low cost airlines over the next 20 years. The introduction of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) over the next 10-20 years supports these goals.

Interfaces, interaction and emergence

Interfaces are probably the hardest part of engineering a system, and the part most prone to late surprises. Yet in Systems Engineering, interfaces and interactions give us the emergent system properties, which are so powerful if harnessed properly. This presentation will feature Bob Dale giving practical examples of interfaces and real anecdotes from his own experience, with comments from other areas of Systems Engineering.
