In this era of economic constraints there’s an ever increasing need for operating assets to function to their maximum potential – and that’s true across any sector – but just as important is the need for these assets to continue to perform safely. As with many defence organisations AWE has undergone significant transformation in the last ten years as a consequence of changing stakeholder requirements, increasing system complexity and an ever reducing defence budget. Systems Engineering is increasingly embraced within AWE as the key to managing this complexity through life. However, embedding Systems Engineering practice requires more than implementation of the process to be successful, it needs commitment across the enterprise from all business functions. In order to deliver the company vision and continue to be successful in to the future, the people of AWE need to develop an awareness of what Systems Engineering means to the organisation and also to their individual and team roles. The message that Systems Engineering is not just for systems engineers is key, and that the benefits of Systems Engineering practices can be realised across all AWE functions. To date much of the Systems Engineering training and education within AWE has been delivered to specific groups with specialist needs rather than creating awareness at the right level of abstraction across the entire enterprise. The aim of this talk is to demonstrate how a collaborative partnership involving academia, industry and AWE has used a virtual learning environment to develop, design and implement an introduction to Systems Thinking and Systems Engineering that can be understood by all employees regardless of their role in the development of complex systems.

Bombardier has been employing System Engineering techniques for a number of years to bring improvements in the integrity of the design and ensure timely product approval.This has been undertaken in an industry environment where customer needs and the regulatory framework have been subject to significant changes. This presentation will focus on some of SE techniques employed and challenges faced in their implementation. In the lead up to the Olympics, Loughborough University hosted Team GB for their preparaton for what turned out to be a hugely successful campaign and a record medal haul. This involved 550 athletes, 450 coaches and 300 volunteers passing through the campus for a series of events including sports training camps, media days, Olympic torch relay and the kitting out of the whole team.

We are delighted to welcome Steve Hyde, the outgoing Head of the Systems Engineering and Integration Group at the Ministry of Defence, giving us his thoughts and reflections on how Systems Engineering has moved on in MOD during his time in post, and how it is expected to develop in the future.

There was a considerable rail contingent at the INCOSE international symposium in Rome in July 2012, including several RIG members. Rhianne, David and Bruce will present some considered reflections on the event. It won’t be a trip report. Instead they will analyse their experience to propose conclusions about: Where SE is, in the rail sector and more generally; Where it seems to be going; and What this means for those interested in embedding SE ideas within rail organisations. Audience participation will be encouraged so that we can pool our experience and form the most accurate picture of the state of rail SE. The conclusions will be refined in the light of contributions from the floor.
