Don’t Panic! – The Absolute Beginners Guide to Systems Thinking

New!

ISBN 978-1-7384267-6-8

The Don’t Panic series, has been developed as a result of a growing number of people asking for more of our thorough, short, and easily-digestible guides and are a maximum of 55 pages in length.

Systems Thinking is a recognised key competency that helps Systems Engineers to understand and address broad socio-technical challenges. Academia, industry, governments, international bodies, and non-profit organisations also promote its power to help frame and tame complex connected issues across life and society. Still many may be wondering how, where, when, and why it might be applied to their respective contexts

This Don’t Panic Guide shows how Systems Thinking can help us to: • identify and characterise complex problem or opportunity scenarios; • recognise, relate, and engage extended interests in order to make more informed decisions. • select and use appropriate systems concepts and methods to make, manage, implement, and monitor those decisions more effectively.

The book introduces key concepts, application prompts, references, and development resources with particular emphasis on real-world practice. It also aims to provide a springboard for more advanced students and practitioners of Systems Engineering to undertake further investigation and personal development.

Don’t Panic! – The Absolute Beginners Guide to Agile in Systems Engineering

New!

ISBN Number: 978-1-7384267-8-2

The Don’t Panic series, has been developed as a result of a growing number of people asking for more of our thorough, short, and easily-digestible guides and are a maximum of 55 pages in length.

The ethos of Agile is simple, but can be hard to deliver in complex Systems Engineering projects, as it assumes a certain context as an enabler.

This book aims to provide advice on the applicability of Agile approaches to cyber-physical Systems Engineering, providing simple tests of the context. It also recognises that Agile Systems Engineering should not be considered as a ‘one size fits all’ solution; however, for certain process stages, activities or tasks, or at elemental scope, it can prove advantageous.

This book provides some high-level advice on what Agile techniques to embrace, and those to avoid, and why MBSE is a critical enabler for Agile Systems Engineering. It also Re-imagines the principles behind the Agile Manifesto for use on complex cyber-physical systems.

Don’t Panic! – The Absolute Beginners Guide to Architecture and Architecting

ISBN Number: 978-0-9934857-7-0

The Don’t Panic series, has being developed as a result of a growing number of people asking for more of our thorough, short, and easily-digestible guides and are a maximum of 55 pages in length.

Architecture in Systems Engineering retains an elusive air, perceived by many as abstract, complex, difficult to understand and apply, and of questionable value. This book aims to dispel these perceptions, to bring clarity to the concept of system architecture and the corresponding process of architecting.

Architecture is all about fundamental structure and properties and is one of the most powerful system concepts. It lies at the heart of Systems Engineering. System architecting brings disciplined thinking to articulating and addressing the essentials of a system in terms of scope and order of architectural considerations.

Although this is an introductory book, it encourages rigour and draws on extensive and varied practical experience.

Don’t Panic! – The Absolute Beginners Guide to System Integration and Test

ISBN Number: 978-1-7394631-6-8

The Don’t Panic series, has being developed as a result of a growing number of people asking for more of our thorough, short, and easily-digestible guides and are a maximum of 55 pages in length.

The path to acceptance of a new System is paved with pitfalls. System Elements fail in integration testing, rework follows, then re-testing, and repeat as the full system is synthesised. The whole process can be difficult, time-consuming and inefficient.

But it doesn't have to be. The good news is that principles and processes exist to cover progressive assurance of systems, backed by many decades of cross-industry practical experience. Trying to follow every recommendation can be as financially ruinous as skimping on the integration and testing activities and suffering the resultant rework costs.

This book sets out to summarise the best of the best practises in a short and easily-digestible form; and to suggest ideas for how the practitioner may best tailor them to their project and enterprise needs.

Don’t Panic! – The Absolute Beginners Guide to Model-Based Systems Engineering

ISBN: 978-0-9934857-1-8

The Don’t Panic series, of which this is the first one, are being developed as a result of a growing number of people asking for more of our thorough, short, and easily-digestible guides and are a maximum of 55 pages in length.

This book was co-authored by Jon Holt and Simon Perry. Jon is an international award-winning author and public speaker, having written 12 books on MBSE and its applications. He is the current Technical Director of INCOSE UK as well as a Professor of Systems Engineering at Cranfield University, where he is involved with the teaching of, and research into, MBSE.

Simon holds Bachelor degrees from both the University of Leeds and the Open University and since gaining his degree in Mathematics in 1986, he has spent 30 years working in all aspects of software and systems engineering. He often speaks at Systems Engineering conferences and is the author of six books on Systems Engineering and related topics.

‘It’s too complicated’, ‘I don’t have the time’, ‘I can’t change the way that we have always worked’, ‘my project has already started’ and ‘my staff won’t understand it’ are just some of the many reasons given for why people won’t even consider, let alone implement, Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).

This initial hurdle of engaging with the Systems Engineering and wider communities without them running for the hills in abstract fear is one of the biggest problems that faces MBSE practitioners.

This book is our response. It aims to provide an honest, straightforward and simple introduction to the world of MBSE that almost anyone can understand.

Don’t Panic! – The Absolute Beginners Guide to Service Systems and Services

ISBN Number 978-0-9934857-8-7

The Don’t Panic series, has been developed as a result of a growing number of people asking for more of our thorough, short, and easily-digestible guides and are a maximum of 55 pages in length.

Services and Service Systems are all around us, and in the UK they contribute 80% of its GDP.

However, we often forget to incorporate the need for services into our systems thinking. This may be because Systems Engineers tend to be overly equipment orientated and often miss the Service viewpoint to the detriment of the holistic view they are expected to have.

The good news is that services, and the systems that support them, can be readily analysed and therefore understood by using a tailored set of the tools and techniques that Systems Engineers often use. This book shows, using many real-world examples, how an initial understanding of service systems and services can be achieved.

The Don’t Panic series, has been developed as a result of a growing number of people asking for more of our thorough, short, and easily-digestible guides and are a maximum of 55 pages in length.

If you are an existing user of SysML, or are thinking of starting to use it, then this book is for you.

Why? Because SysML version 2 is under development. Unlike the 1.n updates to SysML version 1 which introduced only minor changes, version 2 of the language is a major update. SysML version 2 has been developed from scratch and is no longer dependent on the UML2 metamodel, but is based in a new metamodel called KerML - the Kernel Modelling Language.

While much of version 2 will be familiar to existing users of SysML, there are a number of significant changes. This Don't Panic! Guide gives an introduction to these changes, shortening the learning curve for when tool support for SysML version 2 becomes available.

While much of version 2 will be familiar to existing users of SysML, there are a number of significant changes. This Don't Panic! Guide gives an introduction to these changes, shortening the learning curve for when tool support for SysML version 2 becomes available.

Advanced Applications in Systems Engineering - Implementing MBSE into Your Business - The Trinity Approach

ISBN Number: 978-0-9934857-5-6

Building on the success of the Don't Panic line of books, Advanced Applications in Systems Engineering is a new series of in-depth books that will focus on single applications of Systems Engineering.

The first book in the series is "Implementing MBSE into Your Business - The Trinity Approach" by Jon Holt and Simon Perry.

Whilst the theory and practice of MBSE is becoming more mature, one of the biggest obstacles in realising the full benefits of an MBSE approach is how to develop a strategy in order to plan and, ultimately, realise its implementation in an organisation.

Many organisations rush into into buying MBSE tools and training courses, without any forethought. It is essential that an organisation understands the reasons why it is adopting MBSE, what its current MBSE capabilities are, what future MBSE capabilities it requires and how to plan to evolve in terms of its people, processes and tools in order to achieve its future goals.

This book is aimed at practitioner-level Systems Engineers and draws on the authors' decades of experience applying and deploying MBSE in companies of all sizes. It introduces the Trinity Approach to MBSE implementation, which provides a toolkit to help organisations determine their reasons, capabilities and planned evolution for an effective MBSE implementation.

Think Engineer - A Book for Key Stage 2

ISBN 978-0-9934857-0-1

‘Think Engineer’ is a new children’s book that is designed to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and in particular engineering to school children. The book was launched in November 2015 and is published by INCOSE UK.

The book is aimed at Key Stage 2 pupils (ages 7-11), and their parents and teachers to raise the awareness of engineering.

The book is written by Jon Holt (author of ten books on Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and current Technical Director of INCOSE UK) and is beautifully illustrated by renowned artist Ian Simmons.

The book is written in simple rhymes and tells the story of two children, one of whom is considering her options at school. She is frustrated by the options that she faces but, never fear, the Engineer in the Hat is here! Join the Engineer in the Hat for a roller-coaster journey through engineering – “Engineering, we know, will not leave you snoring!” Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is purely intentional.

Please allow up to 28 days for delivery as the books are printed on demand.

Capability Systems Engineering Guide

This document has been produced by the INCOSE UK Capability Working Group (CWG) to provide some high level guidance in the Systems Engineering of complex capabilities. This document is based upon practice from a range of sectors, including rail, defence and information services.

Capabilities are different from Products. Capabilities are realised through a combination of people, processes, information as well as equipment. The Capability Working Group found Capability Systems Engineering in a range of different industries, often with different language, but the same underlying challenges, mind-set and methods. In Defence it is called Through Life Capability Management, and sometimes System of Systems Engineering. In Rail it is called Whole Systems Engineering. In Information Services it is called Enterprise Architecting or Service Design.

This guide builds on:

  • UK Defence practice in Through Life Capability Management and GB Rail practice in Whole Systems Approach
  • Key national and international standards in Asset Management (PAS 55), IT service management (ISO 20000) and programme management (Managing Successful Programmes™)
  • Systems Engineering work done by Hitchins, Kemp, Mollett, Ring, Sillitto, Dogan and Daw

Some readers of this guide will see Capability Systems Engineering as something radically new. Others will see it as ‘plain old Systems Engineering’. This guide does not explore this debate. Rather it describes what good Capability Systems Engineering looks like, and provides tips for capability systems engineers.

Agile Systems Engineering Guide

This document has been produced by the INCOSE UK Agile Systems Engineering Working Group to provide some high level guidance in what is meant by Agile Systems Engineering and how it should be approached. This document is based on practice from a range of sectors, including aerospace, defence, rail, automotive and information services.

Despite its successes, there is increasing dissatisfaction with a conventional ‘V Model’ Systems Engineering approach as defined in the INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook (Walden et al., 2015). Even effective Systems Engineering can be time consuming and expensive. Businesses and governments are always looking for more efficient approaches. The adoption of Agile approaches from software offers potential for radical improvements.

This guide takes the ‘True Agile’ World View identified by Kemp, et al (2015) and describes the principles needed to be able to apply it, and whether or not it may be appropriate for a given organisation or development type.

Introduction to System Architecting - PDF Version

At a high level, this guide covers the who, what, when, where, why and how of system architecture in relation to all systems, irrespective of their level, scale, composition, form, or construction. It covers the basic concepts and principles, the benefits, and the different uses of architecture. It also defines the basic architecting processes, the enabling methods and tools, and explains the role of the architects involved with them. The guide is written to be accessible, yet not over-simplified, comprehensive, yet not over-long. It assumes no prior knowledge in the subject area but is well-founded so that it provides a springboard for further investigation. For those readers seeking more detailed information, key references are cited throughout and most of these also point to further sources of information, from which an extensive body of detailed material can be accessed.

UK SE Competency Framework Hard Copy

Systems Engineering Competency Framework:

Issue 3 of the Systems Engineering Competency Framework and Annex A Guide to Competency Evaluation now been completed.

The Systems Engineering Competency Framework was developed 'to have a measurable set of competencies for Systems Engineering which will achieve national recognition and will be useful to the enterprises represented by the INCOSE UK Advisory Board'.

It provides a common language with which to describe and discuss the competencies that are required to conduct good Systems Engineering.

The hardcopy has been split into two colour-coded parts, The first being the framework itself, and the second being the Annex A Guide to Competency Evaluation Issue 2.

The colour-coding provides a quick easy way to cross-reference different areas of the Framework with the Annex.

The PDF of the UK SE Competency Framework can be downloaded from this INCOSE UK website - go to Professional Development and follow the SE Competencies tab.

Systems Engineering Competency Framework

This Systems Engineering Competency Framework, which was developed by the INCOSE International Competency Working Group, builds on from the INCOSE UK Systems Engineering Competency Framework The purpose is to provide a set of competencies for Systems Engineering within a framework that provides guidance for both beneficiaries and practitioners to identify knowledge, skills, abilities and behaviors important to Systems Engineering effectiveness in the domain for which the competency model is applied. The objective is to leverage existing competency frameworks and competency models in order to:
• Capitalize on feedback received on existing frameworks and models from a decade of practical use globally;
• Improve alignment with other INCOSE initiatives;
• Address content and language to widen its appeal, recognizing the growth of a systems approach within several new domains;
• Reflect the latest collective intelligence of industry as reflected in the data, descriptions and standards available as learning benchmarks globally.

A1 Poster of Z0

We live in a world where the complexity of our systems, whether they are technical, social, financial or anything in between, is constantly increasing. This is not only true at a system level due to the increased interactions and dependencies between system elements and the blurring of traditionally hard boundaries, but also at a higher level due to the fact that we now live in a truly connected world. Systems Engineering describes an approach for realising successful systems in an increasingly complex world.

ASEC Proceedings 2023

These are the published papers of the INCOSE UK Annual Systems Engineering Conference (ASEC), the best of the papers from this year’s submissions to ASEC 2023.

We hope that this will allow delegates to review/study the papers in more depth after the conference, the printed proceedings will also give the option for members who were not able to attend the event to be able to get a taste of what happened at ASEC 2023 and hopefully inspire them to attend a future event. We trust that that proceedings will provide a lasting benefit and fitting record of INCOSE UK’s ASEC 2023 – Embracing the New Opportunities.

ASEC 2020 Proceedings

Welcome to the INCOSE UK Annual Systems Engineering Conference in this unprecedented and most unusual of years. The effects of the global pandemic have impacted all of our lives to differing degrees and the impact that it has had on many aspects of our lives means that life will probably never be quite the same again. This year we have made the decision to have a virtual conference rather than our usual face-to-face event, but we are still able to produce this set of proceedings. The submission and review of all the papers has not changed so you can be assured of our usual high standard. If you have never published before and you feel that you have something that may be of interest to the wider Systems Engineering community, then why not consider submitting a paper for next year’s event? INCOSE UK is run for the benefit of Members, whether they are individuals or part of the UKAB. We rely on Member contributions to make these events successful. We now offer a range of products and services to provide benefits to our Members as well as our Professional Registration and Certification programmes. We hope the proceedings will allow delegates to review/study the papers in more depth after the conference, the printed Proceedings will also give the option for members who were not able to attend the event to be able to get a taste of what happened at ASEC 2020 and hopefully inspire them to attend a future event. We trust that that proceedings will provide a lasting benefit and fitting record of INCOSE UK’s ASEC 2020 – “The Challenges of Contemporary Systems Engineering”.

SEASON Report 2020

The United Kingdom has a proud history in engineering and technology, and was one of the leading nations for developing and codifying Systems Engineering. This SEASON report assesses the state of Systems Engineering in the UK in 2020, following previous reports published in 2009 and 2014. We are living in the age of significant systems challenges. Global challenges such as food, health, security and climate change are ever-more demanding. Society is recognising that sustainability is a necessity not a luxury. There is a constant pressure for ever more complex and integrated systems in all aspects of our lives. These challenges place new demands on the types of systems that are needed, their connectedness, and society’s expectations of success. Systems engineers are linchpins in responding to these challenges and it is our opportunity to rise to these challenges. To achieve this however, the practice of Systems Engineering must continue to evolve, so that as systems engineers we have the processes and tools for the job.
