Meet the Author - Jessica Korzeniowska

Come along and hear more about Jessica and her tales of the Good Witch and Systems Engineering challenges. Join Jon Holt, INCOSE UK Technical Director and Giulio Telleschi, AISE - INCOSE Italy Director of Communications as they chat with Jessica about Adventures in Systems Engineering. Jessica Korzeniowska launched Adventures in Systems Engineering during ASEC 2023 and now is your chance to meet her! It consists of a training manual and a work book to help train and teach Systems Engineering in an accessible, memorable and fun way. Jessica's believes that it is vital to keep early career STEM professionals engaged and interested in developing their skills and interest in Systems Engineering. Therefore, using her knowledge as a Principal Systems Engineer and her love of writing, Jessica wrote a training manual and work book in the form of an interactive fantasy themed training course. By incorporating fictional characters alongside Systems Engineering activities it encourages a level of participation which, by the end of the training, enables those who completed the course to apply their new found knowledge to real life Systems Engineering problems. It is intentionally written in a way that it is accessible to anyone working on complex projects who needs an appreciation of Systems Engineering, not just engineers.

Paper Writing Master Class with Prof. Jon Holt

This short, on-line presentation and discussion is intended to provide an overview of the whole paper-writing experience for people who may be considering submitting a paper for consideration at this year’s ASEC. Delivered by Prof. Jon Holt, Technical Director of INCOSE UK. The session has several aims: - To provide guidance on what makes a good paper, how it should be structured and how it should be written. - To provide an overview of the review process that all papers will undergo. By understanding the underlying review process, this will provide potential authors with a better insight into what makes a good paper. - To meet the Technical Director of INCOSE UK and some established, existing authors to talk about their experiences. - To ask any questions that potential authors may have. The session is aimed primarily at new authors, but will be of value to anyone who is thinking of submitting a paper, and even any existing authors who would like to share their own experiences.

2013 Tutorial Day

INCOSE UK tutorial days provide an opportunity to extend or reinforce your Systems Engineering skills by learning from acknowledged experts. This year we have deliberately focussed on subjects that are of practical use in the SE workplace. These include topics that are part of established SE processes and techniques to add to your SE ‘tool-box’. Here is some of the feedback from last year’s delegates: “Good practical demonstration of topic through targeted appropriate exercises.” “All training objectives were met. Very, very useful and allows me to now research further those areas that are particularly of interest or where I need more depth.” “Excellent content extremely relevant and appropriate level of delivery.” We are offering a choice of four full day tutorials that explore a range of Systems Engineering topics. At least 6 registrants are required for a tutorial to be run and there is a maximum of 15 places on each tutorial. You are recommended to book early to secure a place on your chosen tutorial.

Systems engineering and project management - partners in successful projects

There is an emerging recognition within the project management and systems engineering communities that there is potential for putting the ideas of project management and system engineering to work better together. The Association for Project Management (APM) and the UK chapter of the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE UK) intend to work together to help realise this potential. So on Tuesday 15th January 2013, we are holding a joint workshop in London, places are limited The workshop will be an early activity in an extended programme of co-operation between the two organisations; a programme which the workshop will help to shape. The workshop is intended to help projects deliver better systems, more reliably, more quickly and at lower cost. The primary objective of the workshop will be to identify specific areas which the systems engineering and project management communities can profitably explore and to start to identify what needs to be done in these areas. The workshop will also promote communications and the sharing of ideas between the project management and systems engineering communities. For more information and to register please visit the Association for Project Management (APM) website.

Systems Engineering Meeting to review the capability of Small and Medium sized Enterprises to utilise System Engineering

Many larger businesses utilise Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SME's) to carry out work on their own products or services either internally or for development on behalf of clients. Many SME’s, be they external contractors or specialist teams within an organisation, provide essential and high value services which compliment the range of activities that larger organisations can offer within an integrated Systems Engineering approach. This apparent integration belies the fact that the SME's are asked to operate under the burden of a System Engineering process created for the larger enterprise. The reality may be that a more tailored approach by the larger organisation could help them to better utilise high value SME input; or that SME's could define a “Systems Engineering Light” model, better defining the aspects of Systems Engineering relevant to their project roles..........

2nd Railway Systems Engineering Workshop ‘Railway Systems Engineering in a Tough Economic Climate’

As funding for large-scale projects becomes tighter, there is a danger that the effort spent of systems engineering activities will be reduced. Systems engineers know that better systems engineering is needed if rail projects are to deliver more for less. This year’s INCOSE RIG one-day workshop will share experiences and best practice in the application of systems engineering to rail projects, with particular emphasis on the benefits of systems engineering during tough economic times. The workshop is a forum for networking and exchanging knowledge and latest developments in the area of railway systems engineering. The workshop will include invited addresses from senior policy makers and technical experts.

Simple Systems Techniques That Work

Back in the days before we all had computers on our desks, and fancy modelling and analysis tools to use on them, we used to get an awful lot done with a pen and some bits of paper. Some of these simple techniques can produce surprisingly powerful results when applied correctly, and it is the aim of this interactive one-day event to give delegates the opportunity to try some of them out. Every delegate will receive expert tuition and a walk-through of each method, before trying them out on our sample problem... To book for this event, Please visit the event page.

INCOSE UK Rail Systems Engineering Workshop

After a successful series of evening presentations, the RIG is now organising a day-long workshop to explore in more detail three difficult questions that rail organisations face in increasing their take-up of systems engineering: 1. How should we apply systems engineering principles in the rail environment? 2. How do we find enough rail systems people? 3. How do we write systems engineering into contracts?

Spring Symposium 2002 - "Triple SE - Safe and Secure Systems Engineering"

Since the terrible events of 11 Sep 01, the world has faced a much more uncertain future. Routine travel throughout the world by air, which has hitherto been taken for granted, has become a major source of concern. This has not only caused a major re-assessment of the security and safety of air travel, but the certainties surrounding many other aspects of our ever-more interconnected life have been called into question. A number of recent public inquiries into major incidents have referred to a failure of systems as a prime contributory factor. In getting to the root of these kinds of issues we need to take into account all dimensions of the problem – people, both operators and customers, technology, organisation, environment etc – in other words, the kind of holistic approach that Systems Engineering is well placed to provide. The Spring Symposium for 2002 will therefore have as its theme “Triple SE” – Safe and Secure Systems Engineering.

Spring Symposium 2001 - Systems Engineering for the Third Millennium – Developing the Art and Science to face new challenges

Engineering evolved during the second half of the second millennium as a process for harnessing technology to produce products to support human-centric activity. As engineering became more specialised society’s expectations of engineering it increased. These fostered the need for an overarching process to co-ordinate and integrate engineering and related activities. From these beginnings, systems engineering has emerged in the last 60 years. Systems engineering is the interface between engineering and its customers: commerce and society. It has proved so useful and successful that it has been adopted by non-engineering, more human-oriented disciplines. In order to meet the challenges of these new applications, systems engineering has broadened its tool set to embrace “soft” methods, many of which were originally developed in the human sciences. Thus systems engineering has evolved to provide an integrating conceptual framework for understanding stakeholder (including customer and user) needs; for exploring the solution space to determine the preferred solution; and for co-ordinating all the specialist activities that are needed to realise the selected solution. The discipline of systems engineering now straddles the traditional boundary between the Sciences and Humanities. It has become subject to complex, sometimes contradictory influences. During the 2001 Spring Symposium we would like to explore both the achievements of systems engineering and the challenges facing it. What is the current state of systems engineering? How will it develop in the future? What are the driving forces behind the development of systems engineering? What new skills do systems engineers need to acquire? What new process concepts need to be developed to formalise the application of SE beyond the traditional ‘hard’ systems boundaries? What emerging technologies can be exploited to enhance systems engineering tool capabilities?

Autumn Assembly 2000 (AA00)

Once again the UK Chapter of INCOSE has selected some interesting and challenging topics for in-depth presentation and discussion at the Autumn Assembly. This year we have carefully analysed the questionnaire returns of members and established a programme built around four major issues of concern. As a result we are sure that there is something of interest for everyone.
